Waterproof cotton - Tart Days Cloud 9 - half metre cut

This fabric is extra width 147cm (58") and is sold by the 1/2 metre (50cm), so if you purchase one unit you will receive 50cm x 147cm. Multiple quantities will be cut in a continuous length. Please note, the laminated coating stops short of the selvedge by about 1.5cm.

This is a high quality, 100% certified organic cotton from Cloud 9 Fabrics with a matte polyurethane (PU) waterproof coating. The Cloud 9 range of laminated fabrics do not contain phthalates, harmful dyes, or any other toxic substances that are present in PVC coated laminates. Their laminated cottons are also much better for the environment during the production process.

The fabric is soft, light weight, flexible and can be used for items such as raincoats, bibs, aprons, shower caps, splash mats and seat covers. Ideal for bag making too, I use this fabric to make wash bags and shoulder bags. Laminated cotton is not as tough to sew as oilcloth. You can fuse woven cotton interfacing to the cotton backing of this fabric, and with a matte finish, it is easier to sew than other 'stickier' waterproof fabrics.

Tips on sewing laminated cotton:

When cutting laminated cotton, you can trace on the back of the fabric with a pencil, invisible pen or tailor’s chalk.

Pins will leave holes and can bend on laminate! Either pin in the seam allowance or use wonder clips or small bulldog clips.

You can iron the back of laminated cotton on a low setting to remove any creases. Do not iron on the coated side!

Finger press any seams before topstitching and use clips/pegs to keep the seams flat.

A walking foot, roller foot or Teflon foot is recommended when topstitching laminated fabric to prevent the foot from dragging or sticking to the coated side of the fabric. For this matte laminated cotton, my normal presser foot works just fine. If you don’t have a special foot, try applying a small strip of Scotch tape on your machine’s ordinary foot.

A sharp size 14-16 denim needle or Microtex needle is recommended.

The fabric will be packed folded - if there are any creases simply iron lightly on the back on a low heat. Ready to post in 1-2 business days by 2nd class with proof of postage.
